Common Causes of Clogged Drains and the Ways to Get Rid of It

Drains when clogged are a problem faced in most households and are considered less important. But, it can prove to be an obstacle in carrying out basic daily chores and result in costly repairs. The material gets accumulated in the sink, not allowing water to pass through, leading to blockage. To find a solution to cause prevention, there is a need to search and identify the causes leading to its occurrence.

Here are The Most Common and Primary Causes of Blocked Drains:

#1. Food Waste: Food Waste is a prevalent cause of blocked drains in the kitchen sink. People tend to not clear the food waste if their sinks have a garbage disposal facility, but this practice is not recommended. Try to separate the food waste before using the sink or clear it out before entering the pipe, or it can get stuck and cause blockage. For example, we often ignore the grease and oil on utensils, but they are thick and get stuck in the pipes. They should be wiped before putting the vessels on the sink.

#2. Sanitation Products: These include sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups, cotton swabs, diapers, etc. These are made using cotton and other fibres that are thick and can easily lead to blocked drains. They might be addressed as flushable products but end up failing to do so. So they should be discarded after use instead of choosing to run them down.

#3. Hair: Hair is thick, and a lot of it can get stuck to the grease, combine with it and form a blockage. The best way to find a solution is to prevent it from occurring in the first place and sweep the hair out for precaution. Men and women with long hair must collect the hair that has fallen on the bathroom floor. The hair must be properly disposed of in trash can and not flushed into the drains.

#4. Natural Waste (Tree Roots): Natural waste is often the cause of blocked drains in the surroundings of the cities. For example, trees are present in a lot of places in and around, so due to wind or rain, they break and fall from the tree. There can be a new tree root that has penetrated in the drain line. All such small issues when neglected causes severe blockage in the drains.

#5. Dirt: We use sinks to clean up all possible dirt and ignore the fact that it is not true. Be it mud from shoes or clothes. This is a wrong practice as mud has chunks and won't go down pipes easily. Instead of choosing to wash off the dirt in the sink, try to wipe off the mud with something and dispose of it, and the stains can be washed.

#6. Other Random Objects: These include other listings like plastic, big objects like toy parts, metal, jewellery, rubber and kids should be taught regarding caution towards the same. In case something slips into the drain by mistake make sure to call a blocked drains plumber immediately and get it extracted and properly disposed. The objects are enough to block the entire main drain of the house and cause immense trouble and blocked drains.

#7. Toilet Paper and Wipes: Toilet paper is considered disposable, and that disposable toilet paper can be flushed down. However, it is advised to not flush them down. Wipes and other tissue paper function the same way. Thinner and moister wipes are available in the market, yet it is not a good practice to follow. It might not cause a blocked drain for some time, but eventually, it will reduce the flow of water and then block the drains.

Nevertheless, the above mentioned are some significant causes for drain blockage. As sewage systems are all over, they end up in them, resulting in blocked drains throughout. We can avoid drain blockages to an extent by not flushing plastics or materials that tend to block the inlets and outlets of drains.
